The Supernatural is a single estate Sauvignon Blanc produced from a stunning hillside site in Hawke's Bay by And Co Ltd. The 8.8ha estate faces directly north on calcareous soils with slopes up to 30 degrees. The estate is farmed organically and the wine vinified naturally by owner and winemaker .

In every way, this wine is different than what we have come to expect from New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc: calcium rich soils, organic farming, native yeasts and extended lees aging. This is more reminiscent of Loire Valley Sancerre then typical of New Zealand's racy Sauvignon's. Even the closure is a crown cap (like a beer bottle).

And Co is the family-owned 8.8ha property in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand. Positioned on a north-facing hillside site on calcareous soils with slopes up to 30 degrees, the And Co Estate is perhaps one of the best viticultural sites in New Zealand. The pedigree of site is proven by the fame of the Te Mata Coleraine vineyard – located nearby on the same soils, slope and aspect. ‘This is a site winemakers dream of’, says Owner and Winemaker Gabrielle Simmers. ‘You only have to walk into the vineyard and taste the intensity and complexity of fruit to understand the potential of the terroir. With views over the Pacific Ocean, vineyards, olive groves and volcanoes it’s not a bad place to work either.’

Gabrielle Simmers spent a decade searching for the perfect site to produce a unique, elegant, old world style New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Gabrielle is a firm believer in traditional methods of farming to promote the natural health of the vines, and a winemaking process which relies on the quality of the terroir alone.

The And Co aesthetic is also unique. ‘It represents our interest in design’ says Gabrielle’s partner Greg Collinge. Gabrielle and partner Greg Collinge co-own And Co Ltd, and sister businesses Millar Road and Esther Diamond. Millar Road is a leading luxury vineyard resort, based at the And Co Ltd Estate. Esther Diamond is a design company which works with leading New Zealand artists to create a range of luxury designer homeware.

Gabrielle chose the crown cap for their first release: ‘The crown cap is a perfect seal, and it reflects the philosophy of using traditional methods and innovative ideas to create a beautiful daily drop.’ Invented by William Painter of Maryland in 1892 the crown cap has been an enduring success within the beer, Champagne and soft drink industries. The distinctive design was recently recognized by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art where a bottle of The Supernatural will be included in a major upcoming exhibition entitled ‘How Wine Became Modern’. And Co Ltd was also recently awarded the coveted Gold Pin at the New Zealand Best Design Awards, recognizing the most innovative product and brand design.

The Supernatural (the name refers to And Co's viticultural practices) is the first release from And Co. A rich, opulent, aromatic white, The Supernatural is made with grapes sourced exclusively from low-yielding, organically grown estate vineyards planted in 2003 and 2004. Gabrielle believes in minimum intervention: her wine is naturally vinified and she only adds sulphur at bottling for freshness and to bring the wine to the shelves.

100% stainless steel, 9 months of lees contact

The Supernatural reflects the sun-drenched south sea days Hawke’s Bay is famous for. Atypical nuances of honeysuckle, spice and smoke, a distinct minerality, a strong citrus seam and a rich texture define the personality of The Supernatural. Forget what you know about this variety, The Supernatural is a uniquely complex creature.

Utah Small Winery Pricing; Annual production is 4,500 cases.
