About

Tom Beckmen purchased a stunning, unplanted 365-acre hillside property overlooking the Santa Ynez Valley in 1996. This land would soon become Purisima Mountain Vineyard, possessing all of the necessary elements to produce world-class Rhone varietals. With elevations reaching 1250 feet, the initial planting and farming of Purisima Mountain Vineyard represented one of the most ambitious hillside vineyard endeavors in the history of the Santa Ynez Valley.

Block Six refers to the highest section of our Purisima Mountain Vineyard at an elevation reaching 1,275 feet which is farmed using only biodynamic vineyard practices. From vineyard to bottle, using only natural techniques, we believe this block expresses the essence and special terroir of Syrah grown on our Purisima Mountain.

100% Syrah

The wine was barrel aged for 16 months in 60% new Remond French oak and 40% one and year old Remond barrels

Review

2008: 95 Points, "Taking the straight Purisima Mountain Vineyard Syrah profile, and ratcheting it up a notch, the 2009 Beckmen Vineyards Syrah Block Six Purisima Mountain Vineyard is a thrilling, full bore Syrah that boast knockout aromas of smoked blackberries, dark chocolate, crushed stone, and smoked bacon aromas and flavors. Spending 16 months in 65% new French oak, this shows its elevage with classy, integrated crème brûlée, and vanilla characteristics, yet holds onto its purity of fruit. Full-bodied and concentrated, with brilliant underlying acidity, a seamless, rich texture, and a structured finish, this exciting, perfectly put together Syrah should continue to shine for a decade or longer. Decant if drinking anytime soon. $55" The Rhone Report, Issue 10
