About

The Doix family originates from Poboleda and has been in the winemaking business in the region for the last 5 generations. As far back as the late 1800's the property has been recognized by the quality of their vinous fruit, but it wasn't until 1998 when Ramon Llagostera took the reigns of the property that the wines began to experience worldwide fame.

Like other areas of the Priorat, Poboleda lies at high altitude and is characterized by steep, rock-covered hillsides. The vineyards of Mas Doix lie at between 350 and 400 meters above sea level. The vines are planted on what appears to be pure grey and black slate, with no dirt visible at the surface. Yields are extremely low (as low as 15 hl/ha in some parcels) and re-planting is extremely difficult given the topography and soil structure. The vines vary in age between 70 and 100 years old.

Review

2008: 91 International Wine Cellar, " (65% garnacha, 15% carinena, 10% syrah and 5% each of merlot and cabernet sauvignon): Vivid ruby. Sexy, intensely perfumed aromas of red and dark berry preserves, spices and minerals. Silky and sweet on the palate, with very good depth and clarity to its raspberry and mulberry flavors. Shows no rough edges and drinks very easily right now but I have no doubt that this will be even better with a few more years of bottle age. This is pretty suave for the money."

2008: 91, Wine Advocate, "The entry level is Salanques with an annual production ranging from 18-25,000 bottles. The 2008 Salanques is made up of 65% Garnacha, 20% Carinena, and the balance Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. The owners consider 2008 to be one of the top 3 vintages of the decade, “a great vintage with low yields and vibrant acidity”. Its older vines were aged for 12 months in 50% new French oak while the younger vines were aged in second year barrels. Medium purple in color with a fragrant nose of cedar, mineral, spice box, lavender, black cherry, and blueberry, on the palate it is smooth-textured, intense, and concentrated with 2-3 years of aging potential. It will perform optimally from 2014 to 2023.
Mas Doix has a story quite common in Priorat in which professional people living in the big cities return to reclaim the family heritage (and are having more fun than they ever did before). Mas Doix’s flagship cuvee is named DOIX Costers Vinyes Velles with an annual production of only 4-7,000 bottles. It is typically a blend of old-vine Garnacha and Carinena (80-108 years of age) with the proportions varying slightly from year to year. The wine is aged in 100% new French oak for 14-18 months."
