About
The wine was produced from a strict selection of grapes and must from four varieties: Merlot (40%), Cabernet Sauvignon (35%), Syrah (20%) and Sangiovese (5%). To achieve a perfect harmony between the vine and terroir, the entire vineyard is organically farmed. The grapes were vinified separately with a prolonged maceration period of 20-28 days. Temperature-controlled fermentation was followed by malolactic in French barrique with an additional 18 months of aging. Each vintage is held for a minimum of 6 months in bottle prior to release. Only 14,000 bottles of this wine were produced.
Review
2003: "Aromas of blackberry, mineral and coffee. Full-bodied, with big, velvety tannins and a long, long finish. Juicy and concentrated. New world in Bolgheri. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese and Syrah. Best after 2008. 1,200 cases made. $68"
92 Points, Wine Spectator, Oct. 31, 2006.
"The 2001 Bolgheri Rosso Montepergoli, just as in the 2000 vintage, is one of the best wines of the entire appellation. Very deep and brilliant in color, its amply-spiced nose and powerfully expansive aromas of smoky creme de cassis and plums is followed by rich, layered flavors of perfectly ripe berry fruit, tar, river gravel, and cedar, and is lush, dense, and very long. Drink: 2005-2020."
