In Roussillon, in the village of Maury is a vineyard that has been called 'Cabirau' for over 100 years. At the beginning of 2007 its 70 acres were divided into 72 parcels, with 15 owners. Today there is a Domaine Cabirau, consisting of 10 contiguous acres as well as an additional 2 nearby acres. Three contiguous acres have been purchased and replanted this year, as have 1.5 already owned acres. Four more nearby acres are under lease.

"Vinified under the supervision of the Domaine de l'Edre's Jacques Castany and Pascal Dieunidou (for more in praise of whom, see issues 173 and 183), the Cabirau 2008 Cotes du Roussillon Malgre les Functionnaires ("In Spite of the Civil Servants") combines Grenache with smaller, barrel-raised portions of Syrah and Carignan. Violets, blackberries, beef marrow, rosemary, and black pepper set the stage aromatically. A rich mouthful of beet and beef juices, blackberries, and cherries follows, tinged with black pepper, iodine, crushed stone, and pungent herbs. This palate-staining concentrate retains wonderful brightness and invigoration, and should be worth following for 6-8 years. $20." -D.S.
