About

These are the wines of Finca Don Carlos. A Finca is a farm, not a winery. A dozen years ago Hector & Muriel Salvo bought an existing vineyard of ~100 acres in the Valle de Uco, planted to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. No wine was made, the grapes were contracted to Argentina's top producers of sparkling wine.
Hector is an economist from Buenos Aires with a passion for wine. The vineyard purchase was not only an investment, and although it was profitable for ongoing grape contracts Hector wanted to do more. He started cautiously, planting some additional acreage to Malbec and Cabernet and allowing contracts for a few acres each of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to lapse. After 3 years making wine in a custom crush facility, a small, bare-bones, state of the art winery was built.
The wines have been very successful, featuring excellent quality, excellent reviews and great packaging with riveting labels of hand-made paper. They do not merely fill a niche for upper mid-range Argentine wines, they offer world class values in each category.

Review

2007:- 91 Points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Aug

2009 "The dark ruby-colored 2007 Malbec offers up a spicy bouquet of toast, black cherry, damp earth, and incense. Complex on the palate, it has plenty of savory fruit, layers of flavor, good balance, and a lengthy finish. It will evolve for 2-3 years and provide prime drinking from 2012 to 2019. $24" -JM
