About
Qupé, which is an American Indian word for poppy, has developed a fondness for making Rhône-style wines. Qupé Los Olivos Cuvée could so easily be mistaken for a fine Rhône blend. It comprises 44% Syrah, a varietal with which Qupé excels, 44% Mourvedre and 12% Grenache. Details of its oak aging are unknown, but it obviously received quite substantial small oak barrel maturation.
The wine is a firmer, more masculine wine than Qupé Syrah, which has more flesh. It has a rich ruby color with vanilla and summer fruits on the aroma; it is still a little tannic in the mouth, but that should be countered by choice red meats or cheese dishes. It is already drinking well but will clearly improve for another 5-7 years.

Review
2009: Exceptional, "2009 Qupé Los Olivos Cuvée, Santa Ynez Valley, 47% Syrah, 29% Mourvedre, 24% Grenache; 13.4%, ($22): Racy violet, cranberry, and faint underbrush notes mark this nicely balanced, plush red with its leanings toward Côtes du Rhône.
Excellent value." ~ Dan Berger’s Vintage Experiences, November 24, 2011
