About

Frank Mitolo and Ben Glaetzer spent considerable time researching the choice of varietal for Mitolo's first white wine, and Vermentino was chosen as a grape that matches well with food and that would suit the McLaren Vale region. The maritime climate of McLaren Vale perfectly reflects that of the Mediterranean coastal districts of Corsica and Sardinia from which this varietal is best known. Warm days and cool, breezy nights allow for the grapes to develop balanced acidity and fresh fruit flavors.
Winemaker Ben Glaetzer's vision for Jester Vermentino was to achieve a crisp, fresh flavor profile. The grapes are harvested early, which results in lower sugars but good fruit flavors, and a final profile that is seamlessly dry with a refreshingly low alcohol level of just 10%.
Pallid straw yellow in color with light greenish inflection, 2010 Vermentino displays classic minerality and texture. It shows fresh lifted fruit, with notes of melon and citrus and a slightly spiced edge. Refreshing, balanced acidity rounds out to an elongated finish.

Review

2010: "Are you prepared for a crisp, minerally white wine that has oodles of flavor, despite an alcohol level below 10 percent? One that plays a grassy note like a delicate Sauvignon Blanc against a light texture that actually lets the slate-inflected fig and stone fruit flavors fill the mouth? From Australia? If more Aussie growers can achieve similar character to Jester's, it could be the find of the decade."
