About
Kurt's ancestors have been making wine in Kamptal since 1848. Kurt learnt his trade with his father, Franz Angerer, who ran the family winery, but eventually Kurt came to the decision that he should set up on his own, and looked to Australia as a likely destination. With Austria's entry into the European Union in 1995, however, Kurt realised that their was plenty of opportunity right on his doorstep, and so Austria retained one of her best (and best value) winemakers. He set up in Lengenfeld, in Kamptal, and now manages 27 ha of vines, either inherited, purchased or leased. Although these include a wide selection of varieties, as detailed above, it is with the multiple cuvées of Grüner Veltliner that Angerer shows his true mettle; these are transparently terroir driven, the bottlings demonstrating the influence of gravel, granite and loess on the variety, as well as what can be gained (or lost) through the marriage of oak and GV.
Review
2007 "As Angerer points out, the personality of each geologically distinct Gruner Veltliner stands out this year, and they are all lovely, as well as offering good value. Angerer's 2007 Gruner Veltliner Kies displays an unusual, pronounced walnut oil character throughout. Milled grain, salts and chalk help give this 12.5% alcohol wine something of a white Burgundian aura. But green bean, melon, mango, and pungent herbs are present to help remind us of this wine's true origins. It finishes with luscious persistence and well-integrated hints of bitterness, and should perform well over the next 3-5 years."

"Kurt Angerer began his harvest the first week of October. That includes his 2007 reds, which seemed to be taking on oak at an alarming rate when I tasted them last June, although further time will tell. But most of his Gruner Veltliner did not come in much before November. Yet, none reached 14% in alcohol nor showed heat or roughness that I have noticed with other wines and vintages at this address."
