About

Jacques Castany and Pascal Dieunidou are two wine fanatics, farming inherited vines part-time in the village of Vingrau (Roussillon). With limited acreage, average yields of just 1.05 tons/acre, and consistently stellar press, the wines are naturally in short supply, though there are plans to slowly increase production to meet demand.

12.4 acres total in Vingrau, the northern-most village in the Roussillon. Includes Syrah (average age 12 years old), Grenache (average age 50+ years old) and Carignan (even older than the Syrah!), as well as minute plantings of Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris and Macabéo. Parcels are situated in clay/limestone and schistous terroirs in a vast amphitheater called 'Le Cirque', stretching south/southwest towards Tautavel.

50% Syrah ,25% Grenache, 25% Carignan.

Review

2010: "This richly textured wine has a deep ruby color, bright blackberry aromatics, good structure, full fruit, refined tannins, 15% alcohol, and good length with no heat." 89 Gerald D. Boyd Nov 29, 2011 2008: 91 Points “L'Edre's Syrah-Grenache-Carignan blend 2008 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Carrement features ripe purple plum and dark cherry accented by licorice, black pepper, and piquant fruit pit. Polished and glycerin-rich like its 2009 counterpart, this predictably musters an even more remarkable sense of primary fruit juiciness for an effect at once soothing and invigorating, its bitter and pungent elements lending a medicinal cast to a palate-staining finish. It ought to be worth following for several more years, although there is plenty of incentive to revisit and relish it soon.
Jacques Castany and Pascal Dieunidou - for more about whom, see my report in issue 183 - are slowly but confidently expanding their estate. They are also focusing on achieving more gentle fermentative extraction, increasingly favoring remontage over pigeage. The 2010 white here was still working on its sugar, while the Carignan destined for the red blends was still in malo - reflecting an unusually retarded evolution by this estate's standards - so no useful assessment was yet possible of that vintage at this address. Note that the Mourvedre coming on line here is now influencing the character of both of the l'Edre reds. $38” Wine Advocate, Issue #185
