About

Luciano Sandrone is one of the leading producers in Barolo. His story is well known: after years of work as a cellarman he purchased his first vineyard on the Cannubi hill. Since their first harvest in 1978, Luciano and his brother Luca have devoted tremendous efforts towards cultivating the finest fruit in their vineyards, which now cover 63 acres in the best parts of Langa and Roero, and to taking extraordinary care in the cellar.
Sandrone's Barolos are sometimes described as straddling the modern and traditional styles in the region: elegant, attractive and easy to appreciate right from their first years in bottle, but with no less power and structure than traditional Barolos. Along with the extremely low yields in the vineyard, Sandrone has a very rational approach in the cellar. This approach, however, is also unique and outside of simple classification, as Sandrone subjects his wines to a relatively short maceration period, does not use rotary fermenters, and makes limited use of new oak in the maturation process, all signs of a traditional approach in the cellar.
The new winery, built in 1998 at the foot of the steep Cannubi hillside in the heart of the Barolo district, is characterized by the respect for tradition and desire for innovation that also define Sandrone wines.
"Cannubi Boschis" Barolo is Luciano Sandrone's historic wine, and has been his leading wine since 1985. It is also his only cru: the Nebbiolo grapes all come from the prestigious Cannubi subzone in Barolo. Perched at an altitude of 250 meters (820 feet), the vineyards are perfectly exposed South and Southeast. The wine is fermented in 500 and 600-liters French oak barrels then aged for 24 months in the same wood. Only 8,900 bottles of this vintage were produces.
"Extraordinary producers of Barolo, Luciano Sandrone and his wife worked at Marchesi di Barolo before acquiring a tiny plot of land outside their native village of Barolo in 1977. Theirs quickly became a cult wine, first with their 1982 and 1985 vintages. Then they made a wine that merited one of the first perfect scores I ever gave a Barolo, the 1990. There is attention to detail in the vineyard and in the winery at every level, and the results are wines that are hybrid creations, paying respect to both progressives and traditionalists." Robert Parker, The World's Greatest Wine Estates
"Luciano Sandrone is one of the leading lights in Piedmont. No grower has managed to so brilliantly reconcile modern and traditional approaches in making wines that are soft, supple and approachable when young, but also capable of aging beautifully." Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate, November 2007

Review

2005 Vintage:

- 96 Points, Wine Spectator, July 31, 2009
"Offers blueberry aromas, with sweet tobacco and mahogany. Full-bodied, rich and powerful, with plum pudding and milk chocolate flavors. This is very special. The Sandrones are genius with Cannubi. Best after 2013. 790 cases made. –JS"

"($165) Good deep, bright red. Compelling perfume to the aromas of raspberry, smoke and minerals. At once silky and firmly built, with terrific juiciness and grip from sound acids. Not as dense as some vintages but boasts lovely fruit intensity and verve. Finishes with a firm tannic spine and lingering aromatic character. This seems even fresher in bottle than it was in barrel two years ago."

- 95 Points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, April 2009
"Sandrone's 2005 Barolo Cannubi Boschis offers up pretty notes of mint, flowers, spices and dark red berries, with sweet notes of French oak that linger on the finish. This is a decidedly slender Cannubi Boschis that lacks some of the sheer pedigree and explosiveness of the best vintages. The tannins need some time to soften, but this is a wine that has continued to grow in bottle. It could very well turn out to be one of the vintage's surprises. In 2005 the harvest took place at the end of September and the wine was aged in 500-liter barrels (one-third new). Anticipated maturity: 2011-2020. $169-$220. -AG"

2004: "I was blown away by the breathtaking purity and definition of Sandrone's 2004 Barolo Cannubi Boschis. A translucent dark ruby, this weightless yet sumptuous Barolo bursts from the glass with layers of dark ripe fruit that coat the palate with stunning grace and elegance. As it sits in the glass notes of licorice, tar and sweet toasted oak gradually emerge to complete this magnificent wine. I tasted this along with the 2001, which has shut down considerably since I last tasted it earlier this year. Today the 2004 is the more elegant wine although the 2001 looks to be more powerful and perhaps longer-lived. My rating of the 2001 (95) appears to have been conservative by about 2 points. One of the highlights of the vintage, Sandrone's 2004 Barolo Cannubi Boschis is not to be missed. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.
Luciano Sandrone has been ecstatic about the quality of his 2004s since I first tasted the wines with him in the winter of that year. While 2004 is a superb vintage overall, Sandrone's wines stand out, most notably for their extraordinary elegance." 98 Points, Wine Advocate, Issue #174
